I know I’ve been talking about it for a long time but it’s finally arrived. It’s not completely finished but we have enough done to submit it to the search engines. According to our web designer, it takes about 60 days for the search engines to recognize a site — so that’s about the end of Oct. In the interim, if you would like to find us, simply send an e-mail to whistle@mcn.org and we will send you a link to the web site. Add us to your favorites list and you have access to one of the most comprehensive Fenton sites on the net.  We are planning to do Fenton first, then Christmas, Harmony Kingdom, and . You will be able to see by the buttons, what categories will be going up. We have extensive selections in all of these categories. Have fun and Happy Collecting!.

Just Announced - Spring 2002
                                                    Reserve Yours Today!

We have just placed our Spring 2002 order and there are some wonderful things to look forward to. The Early Spring (aka Valentines) Selection usually arrives the end of December and Late Spring (aka Easter) usually arrives the end of January. The Early Spring Limited Editions are as follows: A stunning 10 1/2” Cranberry Heart Optic Basket with a clear handle.   It is limited to 2950 pieces and is $135 (2176CR).

There are 4 new Mary Gregory Style on Cranberry pieces. The decoration on these pieces consists of white enamel paint which is uniquely shaded and has raised opaque highlights. Each piece is limited to 2350 pieces. The 11” Basket (1533MV – $135) has an elegantly dressed lady golfer from the 1920’s and the 10” Vase (5985MH – $165) has a young school girl riding her bike. The 2 pc. Fairy Light (1505MZ – $95) has a young girl sitting on a fence daydreaming and the 4” Vase (3249M8 – $95) has a little boy petting his dog.

Late Spring brings us 4 pieces of Lily on Blue Burmese. The basket ($99.50) and vase ($115) are limited to 2750 pcs. The new turtle mould ($35) is limited to 4750 pcs. And the 21” Student Lamp ($350) is limited to 950 pcs.

Early Spring 2002 – Con’t.

Fenton has introduced a new blue – their 65th blue color to be exact. Their chemist was one of the speakers at the National Convention and he just couldn’t understand why one of the other 64 blues wouldn’t work. The name for this color is “Victoria’s Attic” and is based on the color of the Blue Topaz jewel. We didn’t see this color at the convention, but the brochure color is a bright, electric blue. It reminds me of a color called Peacock Blue, but not quite as dark. The 12 pieces in this collection are all made from vintage moulds and undecorated. However, there is quite a bit of pattern in the moulds — GWTW Roses lamp, Thistle Basket, Elite Vase, Bird on a log, Button and Arch Sm. Pitcher, Covered Box, Drapery Vase, Perfume and Bell. There is also the Vining Votive w/ Tea Light and the Vase with Metal Stand.

There are also 4 pieces of Blue Topaz Overlay which is softer due to the white interior – melon box, a 6 1/2” vase and a 9 1/2” vase and a melon basket which is part of the Family Signature Series signed by Nancy Fenton.
Cottage Rose on French Opalescent — The background on this lovely collection is translucent French Opalescent (white) with a pink floral “Cottage Rose” decoration. This rose is very similar to the Charleton pattern which many of us collect. There are 7 pieces in this collection-Cat, Bear, Bunny, Vase, Pitcher, Bell and Basket.
Into the Pond — This collection consists of the new frog and turtle moulds which Jon Saffell just completed as well as the sunfish. There are 4 different colors of each animal.

Late Spring 2002 – Con’t.

In addition to the Lily on Blue Burmese Collection,
Fenton has 4 Limited Edition Eggs. There is a Ruby ($59), Cobalt ($49) and Burmese ($59) egg on sculptured bases as well as a hand painted 5” French Opalescent Blown Egg ($89.50). These 4 are each limited to 3000 pcs. There is also a Black Egg on a sculptured base with a folk art rooster decoration at $39.50.

New for 2002 are Easter Decorating Eggs without bases. They are 2 1/2” tall and are each decorated with daisies. They sell for $20 and are in pink green and violet.

Once again, the Folk Art Animals Collection is black glass. This year they are decorated with white polka dots and bright red combs. There are lots of bright yellow-green highlights on feathers around their necks and tails. If you subscribe to the Glass Messenger, there was a picture of the large standing rooster in it. This Collection consists of 5 different roosters and 2 bunnies.

There are also other mini bunnies and roosters in pink, blue and violet colors. Fenton has brought the open edge basket weave mould back as a basket this year along with the small hobnail, a tulip and footed Waterlily basket.

Inspirations — This collection is violet glass decorated with Fireflies (aka lightening bugs) and grass. We don’t have lightening bugs in CA, but they are everywhere in WV. I remember catching them as a kid growing up on the farm. Once we had a jar full, we’d sit them on the table, turn off the lights and watch them light up. Then we’d let them go, just to do it all over again the next evening.

Trinkets for Treasures — There are 7 styles of trinket boxes in 5 colors.

Hugs for You — A Baby Bunny has been added to this line of Bears and Kittens. All are handpainted with a whimsical floral pattern and a happy phrase.

National Fenton Convention(s) Recap

John and I went to both The National Fenton Glass Society’s Convention and the Fenton Art Glass Collectors Club of America’s Convention this year. We had 3 weeks in WV and it was about 100 degrees with 90% humidity. ( I now remember why I left the Ohio Valley and moved to Northern California — here we have sweatshirt weather year round and no humidity.) We got to the Flea Markets in Marietta on Friday July 27th at 6 am. Then we went to the High School in Williamstown and the Park. By now we should know that you never find any great deals on Fenton Glass during the Fenton convention – however, we did find good prices on some glass from other companies. It never ceases to amaze me how much time and effort these volunteers put into the conventions. For those of you who haven’t been to a convention, in addition to banquets, luncheons and auctions, there are seminars, table displays and hospitality suites where you can go and chat with other Fenton Fanatics. It’s a great time and you should all try to go to at least one convention. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make these so much fun.

The Fenton Decorators in early 2001

Many of our customers want to know who decorated a specific piece. We even have some collectors who only buy pieces painted by certain decorators. The following information was handed out at the convention and I thought it might be helpful especially if you are buying on internet auctions. (There are a lot of people who are buying Fenton 2nds, painting them and selling them on the net as one of a kind. Buyer Beware!) These are the names of all the decorators who were working at Fenton in early 2001.

The “Sample Room”

At the Fenton Factory, up stairs beside the Museum there is a room which Fenton converts to the “Sample Room”. When you register at the FAGCA Convention you are assigned a 1/2 hour time slot to visit the Sample Room. You line up outside and pick numbers to see who gets to go in first. Inside, there are one of a kind pieces, whimsies, decorated pieces done by the designers as samples which were not selected to put in the line, and short runs of special product. The first day, you can only buy 4 pieces. The next day you can buy as many pieces as you want and stay as long as you want. John and I found 2 baskets which were samples decorated by Martha Reynolds. some hanging heart eggs, and Topaz Opalescent animals.
This is one of the highlights of the Fenton Art Glass Collectors Club Convention.

on a list of all of their decorators over the years. If we get that list, we will pass it along. Again, these are only the decoraters who were employed at Fenton in early 2001.
