We’re back from the Fenton Convention and what a whirlwind it was. This is our 4th Fenton Convention this year (one in Portland in May, then back to Eugene, OR in June and then 2 conventions back to back in W.Va. the end of July and beginning of August.) All of them are interesting and we always look forward to seeing our friends and customers. However, the ones in W.Va. also give us the opportunity to visit the Factory and talk with the Fenton Family to find out what’s happening and what future products are in the pipe line.
Spring 2003 has about 100 new pieces added to the line. There are new colors and moulds as well as some of our all time favorites. George and Nancy Fenton introduce the Spring Line at the FAGCA (Fenton Art Glass Collectors of America) Convention each year. Listed below are some of the highlights we saw.
Spring 2003
Mary Gregory on Cranberry
(Delivery targeted for late Dec.)
This continues to be Fenton’s best selling Limited Edition Line. This year’s Collection consists of a
small vase with a little girl swinging. There is a larger vase which has a little girl sitting in a field reading a story to a bunny, mouse and squirrel. The design on the
basket is a little girl standing in front of a fence feeding a little lamb. The fourth piece is a
student lamp which is decorated around the entire shade. The front of the lamp shade has a little boy, with his dog, playing marbles and the dog house is on the back of the shade.
Mary Gregory Glass originated in the 1800's in the Czech Republic and was known as the Poor Man’s Cameo Glass. It is created by painting white enameled figures on colored glass. This is a difficult process requiring many layers of white paint to create the depth needed to make the distinctive designs. There are different versions of how this type of glass became known as Mary Gregory but no one knows for sure.
